Quick Katamari Kudos

It’s just a quick filler blog today, folks. As you might remember, I just got a PS3 recently. A few days ago, I finished playing through the PS3 exclusive Katamari Forever, and it put me in the mood for a tribute blog on one of my favorite series.

Game Review: The Mystery of the Crystal Portal (PSP Minis)

When you were a kid, did you ever read Highlights Magazine? My favorite section was the Hidden Pictures page, where you had to find certain objects scattered about a large backdrop. Now you can have that same kind of picture-finding fun on the PSP with The Mystery of the Crystal Portal, a downloadable Minis title.

Travis Touchdown’s 8-bit Side Jobs

Travis Touchdown, the protagonist in No More Heroes, likes perverted anime, wrestling, and video games. He bought a real working light saber-like sword so he could go out and kill all the assassins around so he could be number one. Why? To earn more money to buy video games, of course. Not exactly a role model. Because of all the classic 8-bit game allusions in No More Heroes, it kind of caught my interest and I bought it when it went down in price. The violence didn’t bother me at first, as victims just looked liked piñatas with red streamers coming out of them (the game has a stylized feel and look to it). But the ultra-violent finishing moves you perform on the boss assassins bothered me a bit (I know, I’m a big baby), so I stopped playing. However, I still bought the sequel when it went on sale because I wanted to play the 8-bit NES styled side jobs to help Travis earn money. So here’s a blog about Travis Touchdown’s 8-bit side jobs in No More Heroes 2!

7/11/10

What are we playing?  GamerMom has been too busy to “play” with anything besides the Epicurious App. GamerGirl (10) is still busy making new families and new fashions in The Sims 3 and outfitting her penguin in Club Penguin.  One day she’ll figure out that there’s a game there, but for now it’s just a dollhouse and that’s good enough for her! She’s also had a go recently with that slice of super-Japanese weirdness Katamari Damacy and a bit of Peggle on top of that. GamerBoy has been busy, a little Mario Kart or New Super Mario and Mario Galaxy here, a little Mario Baseball there, and a LOT of Toy Story 3, DS and Xbox 360 versions played about equally. Me? Well….

It’s Pac-Man’s 30th birthday, but the presents are for you! To celebrate this chomp-tacular occasion, Namco Games has a free Flash game on the official Pac-Man Web site! Oh, sure, there are a lot of free Flash games on the Internet, but this one is really fun and addicting. And it has Pac-Man in it, so you know I would talk about it anyway.

Game Review: Picross 3D (DS)

I was excited to come home after a long trip because I knew that, courtesy of Nintendo, Picross 3D was there waiting for me. I’m a big fan of the previous Nintendo Picross games. One could compare them to Sudoku puzzles. While both puzzles involve numbers, the focus is on logic and deduction rather than any math skills. In basic Picross, a grid is outlined above and to the side with a series of numbers that describe how many squares should be filled in each row or column. A series such as 5 3 2 means that row contains 5 consecutive filled squares, then a break, then three squares, then a break, then two squares. Squares on the grid are slowly filled in using logic and deduction until all appropriate filled squares are found an a picture is revealed. I find Picross much more satisfying than Sudoku because I enjoy the process of creating a tangible picture. The newest entry in the Picross series takes the game into the third dimension. Rather than a simple rectangle, puzzles consist of a three dimensional grid of boxes, some of which have to be removed to reveal the shape hidden inside. At first, I was wary of the changes to the game, but soon found Picross 3D to have much of the original game’s appeal.
