Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Cary’s Capcom Crash Course

Well, I just got Marvel vs. Capcom 3, so the next two blogs from me here will be about the characters you can play as so far! Since I know a lot about Capcom characters, we’ll do them first.

But before that, I wanted to bring your attention to Boxer the Unboxer. Remember when I wrote about ‘unboxing’ the LBP2 Collector’s Edition? Well, I had Boxer the sock puppet puppy unbox the collector’s edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as well! You can see it if you click here.

General Impressions

Basically they took everything I loved about Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and amplified it for MvsC3. So yeah, it’s pretty great. I love the option to do Simple controls, so even people like me, who stink at fighting games, can pull off cool moves and stuff. The graphics are excellent and I love how the stages actually have something to do with Capcom and Marvel settings now. Not only that, but the generic elevator music for the stages is gone, and the fighters have their own theme songs now. Definitely a lot of fun for fans of Capcom’s Vs. series. Anyway, here’s a brief look at all the characters on the Capcom side of this game, along with my silly observations about them:

Tron Bonne

I think she’s my favorite character in this game, and one of my favorite Capcom stars overall. She’s a great villain in the Mega Man Legends series, and her Servebots are so darn adorable. How can you NOT like them? Tron Bonne was so popular that she even got her own game! And even though I’m excited about Mega Man Legends 3 that was announced on 3DS, I’d much rather have a sequel to The Misadventures of Tron Bonne. I appreciate that she plays a lot like how she did in the second MvsC game. One of the stage backgrounds is from Legends as well; it’s the one on “Kattelox Islands” with all the fireworks and stuff. There’s also a city stage with parade balloons in the background, and one of them is a Servebot! Tron Bonne’s ending is hilarious in MvsC3, too.

Amaterasu

Her name is too hard to spell, so I just call her the Okami dog. I’m glad they put her in the game, as Okami was my Game of the Year in 2006. I can’t wait for the Okamiden sequel! Only bad thing is that her moves are a bit unconventional, so she’s a bit harder to use than what I had hoped.

Viewtiful Joe

Usually my third person I use for my main team. He plays a lot like how he does in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

Zero

And speaking of which, so does Zero. Even though I’d rather just have plain old Mega Man, I’m glad original Zero is here nonetheless. Zero has a great ending, too. I love it when Capcom makes fun of themselves.

Arthur

He’s the guy from Ghosts N Goblins, and yes, he can lose his armor here and run around in his ‘pantaloons’ as he calls them. Control-wise, he reminds me a lot of Mega Man as he has a lot of easy to use projectile weapons. And one of the stage backgrounds looks like the first level from a Ghosts N Goblins game! I like one of his win quotes, he says he’s glad he doesn’t have to beat this game twice!

Haggar

I think I like the Final Fight arcade game more than what I realize. Haggar has all his moves from that game, including the spinning clothesline move and bashing opponents with a pipe. One of the stage backgrounds is from Final Fight, with Mad Gears graffiti on the buildings and creepy Poison and others watching the fight.

Hsien-Ko

I’m not really into the Darkstalkers games, but I think if I had to pick a favorite character from that series, Hsien-Ko would be it. I pick her all the time in Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo anyway. In this game, she has all her silly attacks, and she looks just so darn cute and adorable juggling those blades in her win pose. She might even end up being part of my main team!

Felicia

I’m not really into catgirls, so I’m not the biggest Felicia fan in the world. But I have a couple of friends who like her a lot. I guess she’s OK. She has blue hair at least, so that’s cool.

Morrigan

Now, I don’t like Morrigan much at all. She’s too fanservice-y, and she’s a succubus and if you know what they do, she’s kind of creepy. Only cool thing I do like about Morrigan is that she has green hair.

Dante

The only reason why I know who this Devil May Cry character is supposed to be, is because he’s on the box. I never really got into the Devil May Cry games. Not cute enough. I do know that Dante loves pizza, though.

Trish

I hear she’s from the Devil May Cry games, too. But I’ve never heard of her, which is no surprise since I don’t play those games. She has a blade thing that looks like the Soul Calibur. She’s kind of pretty but also looks really mean.

Wesker

He’s a guy from the Resident Evil games. I think he’s a bad guy but I don’t know. Never got into those games either, myself. Dead Rising is much more my speed, especially since there are Servebot references in them. I do have fun renting and watching the Resident Evil movies, though, even if they are cheesy and bad. They’re just fun to watch and you don’t have to know anything about the games beforehand and I think Milia Jovovich (not sure if I spelled that right) is kind of neat sometimes.

Chris Redfield

He’s another Resident Evil character that I don’t care about, so we’ll just move along.

Jill Valentine

I usually call her “Jill Sandwich.” I think she’s the only RE character I like. Although I liked her better in MvsC2 when she had her police uniform. She’s a DLC character here, though, so I haven’t tried her yet, so we’ll see how she plays on March 15.

Ryu

OK, now for the Street Fighter guys. I know he’s kind of the main character, but Ryu is so BORING! I don’t know why Capcom keeps using him!

Akuma

And he’s really boring, too. Just a really mad Ryu. I do like how in Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, all he says is “MMMMMM.”

Chun-Li

I do like Chun-Li, though. At least she looks like she can fight stuff with those big ol’ legs of hers.

C. Viper

I guess Capcom wanted to put someone from SF4 in here, and C. Viper is kind of cool I guess. But I’d much rather them put Juri or Rufus in MvsC3 instead. Especially Juri. I thought she was pretty cool, even though she was kind of mean.

Spencer

He’s the guy from Bionic Commando, but I’m not sure if he’s from Rearmed or the new 3-D one. He even uses his bionic arm to pull people closer to him and says “get over here” like in Mortal Kombat! I think it would be cool if they used the blocky 8-bit version of his character. I guess it’s probably good that I’m not making fighting games, huh?

Cary’s top 5 DLC characters I’d like to see

And that’s all the Capcom characters in MvsC3. I don’t know if they’ll have more DLC characters later. But if they do, here are my top 5 choices as to what I’d like in the game

Phoenix Wright

Yeah, I know Capcom has made it crystal clear to fans that he won’t be here, but I don’t care. I’m just such a huge Ace Attorney fan that I wanted to see some representation in this game. Heck, I hate the Prof. Layton games, but I’ll get the Phoenix Wright crossover one anyway if it comes to the US. And I know that Phoenix isn’t supposed to be a fighter, so maybe instead they could put in the Steel Samurai, which is a character from a fictional TV show in the games. Plus he has a cool theme song.

Mega Man

Yup, just plain ol’ Mega Man. He was on my main team in MvsC2, so I’d like to see him return.

Cammy

She’s my favorite Street Fighter character, and also was on my main team in the last game. I know they used the Shadowloo version last time, so maybe this time they could use her red hat version. I like that one better anyway.

Zack & Wiki

I thought this early Wii game was brilliant, and had a lot of old school Capcom charm and challenge. They would make great silly fighters.

Servebot

In the first MvsC game, Roll was the joke character because she was so small. In the second game, the Servebot was even MORE of a joke character because he was even smaller! He had funny attacks, so I’d like to see him return here. But I know these characters I want probably won’t be DLC. But it’s fun to think about.

Conclusions

And that’s all I’ve got right now. In the comments section, tell me your favorite MvsC3 characters and who you like to have on your team. And tell me which DLC characters you’d like to have seen. I haven’t played the game online yet, so if you’d like to challenge me, my 360 gamertag is Klonoa360. I really stink at fighting games, so you’ll win a lot, I guarantee it! Next time on my blog I’ll talk about the Marvel characters. I’m totally clueless about comic books, so it should be an entertaining blog since I’ll be BS-ing my way through it. So, also in the comments section, let’s see if you can guess who my favorite Marvel character is in MvsC3! Later! –Cary
